Welcome!
If this is your first time, why not start here.
I’m Andy, nice to meet you.
I started this blog to answer a question - how do we live well in Barnes during this climate emergency?
My stories are rooted in Barnes. The place I live, think, walk, bike and love to call home. In my first post, I explain how I got here: the blog’s origins, my background, and why I’m more curious than qualified.
The heart of the blog is the Manifesto. This is where you'll find my view of future possibilities. There are several parts to this. Perhaps you'd like to the skip to the list of specific proposals. Remember to return, though. A new proposal is published every month. Together they provide a sketch of how Barnes might look, feel and function in 2050.
These ideas are rooted in evidence, designed for people, and alive to the realities of climate and community alike. That is why every few weeks, I pause to ask: What have I learnt? Are these stories helping me find practical answers to that core question? You’ll find my most recent reflections here.
I am also keen to learn new skills while creating this blog. I’m sharing how I have gone about creating this blog. This is the most recent Inside Bridged report.
You could just dive in.
Take climate change. I try to focus not on the abstract but how it will affect life in Barnes. Richmond council for example, have painted a vivid picture of what life in the borough could be like over the next fifteen years.
Transport is another recurring theme. Hammersmith Bridge has a special place in this blog. Its closure was the trigger for writing this blog. You’ll find regular updates on the Bridge.
What do we know about the traffic patterns locally since the Bridge has been closed?
I wonder what our cars say about us and how people react to traffic reduction schemes.
I take the council to task for learning to love SUVs.
And I explain why the Bridge should be kept car-free, permanently.
Other big ideas proposed by this blog include the greening of Castlenau and restoring The Terrace as one of the areas most significant thoroughfares for all people .. not just drivers.
I hope this is useful and thought-provoking. I am always interested in what you have to say, so please, do drop me a line. Friendly response guaranteed.
Until then, enjoy.
Andy
