'Walking is the number one form of travel'
Fascinating interview with a long-time walking campaigner - story 47
Terence Bendixson is the guest on this edition of Streets Ahead. He was the Guardian's planning correspondent in the 1960s , where a single article set him on the path to a lifetime of advocacy for pedestrians. By 1969, he had joined Living Streets—then known as the Pedestrians' Association—after striking up a connection with its founder.
At the time, this small but mighty organisation had already reshaped Britain’s streets. As the podcast explains, it played a pivotal role in road safety laws, from the introduction of the Highway Code and driving tests to the establishment of 30mph speed limits and pedestrian crossings. And its influence didn’t stop there.
Bendixson is a wonderful storyteller. And that voice. I only wish I sounded like that. If you are interested in the topic or campaigning, well worth the listen.
And he’s right. Walking is the number one form of travel.
Yet another compelling episode from Streets Ahead.
