She is called Beverley Brook. A force of nature, literally
New rain garden to be installed on Barnes High Street to hope with her - story 28
This is good stuff. It is a reminder the changing climate is affecting us. Now. Here in London.
Beverley Brook sounds so, well, English. Well-heeled. She could live in Barnes. Shop in the High Street. Go to the movies at the Olympic Studios. Play tennis at Barn Elms.
It is in fact quite a body of water. A project called Community BlueScapes is slowly changing the area to help us better cope with heavy rainfall. No more swimming on Barnes Common, they hope. This rain garden stops the water flowing quickly in to the brook or river, which is to the left of the diagram below.

There are going to be many more such interventions in the next few years. I suspect we’ll see a stronger push to create SuDs in the many streets of Barnes. Fewer paved over front and back gardens, for instance.
The climate is changing. Our weather is changing. Our built environment needs to change.
