Once again the unusually hot weather has prompted two climate claims. I have heard both today.
Climate change causes the heatwave.
The hot weather has nothing to do with the changing climate: the weather changes naturally.. remember 1976.
Both claims are wrong.
Climate change amplifies the weather. As the BBC reports,
It is well-established that climate change is making heatwaves stronger and more likely.
As humans burn coal, oil and gas and cut down forests, carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere. These gases act like a blanket, warming the Earth.
